The Challenge

With its clean interface and rapid performance, Google Chrome is a cornerstone of digital life. Yet, its branding needed a refresh that mirrored its evolution into a more feature-rich, inclusive, and forward-thinking product. How could the design reflect the browser’s universality while retaining the clarity and approachability its users love?

The Approach

1. Research & Conceptualisation

Martha began by digging into Chrome’s essence—its philosophy of speed, simplicity, and connectivity. Conversations with stakeholders revealed that the branding had to balance familiarity with innovation. Key questions shaped the foundation:

  • How does Chrome’s visual identity evolve without alienating its vast user base?

  • What design elements symbolize its role as a gateway to knowledge and connection?

2. Design Strategy

Colour Palette: Staying true to Chrome’s iconic red, green, yellow, and blue, Martha experimented with gradients and overlapping layers, creating depth and fluidity. The interplay of colours reflected Chrome’s multifunctionality and adaptability.

Typography: Custom typefaces were explored to maintain simplicity while ensuring clarity across multiple languages and screen sizes.

Geometry: Circular elements were refined to evoke a sense of unity and inclusiveness.

3. Prototyping and Iteration

Through rounds of iterations, the team tested various compositions, emphasising user-friendliness and brand cohesion. Subtle tweaks in gradients and shapes added a dynamic energy while keeping the core identity intact.

The Solution

The final design was an embodiment of simplicity meeting sophistication. Vibrant gradients replaced flat colours, adding dimension without complicating the logo. The refreshed branding emphasised Chrome’s accessibility and speed, evoking trust and familiarity while signalling innovation.
