Who sanctioned this? No offence, but the twitter comment section was lit up with a similar reaction after the unveiling of new logo design of New York's official state slogan.
A classic masterpiece created by Milton Glaser in the back of a taxi on a scrap of paper in 1976 resounded with the people around the world who have been to the state. Though created for tourism campaign, I Heart NY in red crayons was the love letter to New York City and its unique personality.
Having been an emotional catalyst and nostalgic brew to millions across the globe over the years, the pressing question of "did it need makeover?" is answered in not so lovely manner by the Internet sleuths (or, the twitter excellency).
The new 'We heart NYC' campaign is a rendition of the original slogan given a subtle makeover post-pandemic. Designed by graphic designer, Graham Clifford, the text reads 'We NYC' with an ideogrammatic heart icon adjacent to it.
The original slogan was in American Typewriter font, which now has been replaced by Sans Serif typeface font.
One does not necessarily have to put on the critique glasses to justify the online fury ensued by this revelation. Comments like "Glaser kerning in his grave" speak volumes about the rebranding salvages gone savage.
We have witnessed a similar outcry after the Nokia Rebranding. Nevertheless, as The Bowery Boys History Podcast said, "Don't mess with Perfection.", its only fair for the design panels to reconsider a makeover of such timeless pieces.
