Bombay DC is leading the way in an era where digital experiences shape how we live and work. Founded in 2015, it has grown into a multidisciplinary studio that integrates design, engineering, behaviour science, and AI to create innovative digital products. From simplifying complex interfaces to building India’s largest online art community, Bombay DC is redefining what it means to build digital-first experiences. In this interview, we explore their journey, their approach to collaboration, and what the future holds for digital design in India.
Bombay DC has established itself as a leader in creating digital products. Can you share how the studio’s journey began and what inspired its vision?
Bombay DC’s founding differentiation lies in its people, who have global experience across Europe, Japan, and the US and a deep understanding of India's fabric. Our method of behaviour design, product design, and engineering has delivered outstanding outcomes to our clients.
We started as a digital design company in 2015, added engineering capabilities in 2018, product management in 2021, behaviour science in 2022 and AI in 2023. We believe that top-quality products can be built at speed only when these functions are deeply in sync and under one control. This DNA is hard to replicate for any of our competitors as it takes years to build this. We now home 75+ designers, behavioural scientists, and engineers in India with global partners.
Our evolution in the last 9 years has been driven by the gap we found in the market, India was transitioning towards becoming a digital-first nation, and there was an urgent need for cohesive, high-quality product experiences, as there was no company offering everything needed to build world-class digital products here. The vision was simple: with people spending an average of seven hours a day on their mobile devices, we saw an urgent need for cohesive, high-quality product experiences and we recognised the need to integrate strategy, content, design, technology and engineering.
Bombay DC brings together a diverse team of designers, technologists, and strategists under one roof. How does this collaborative structure shape your projects, and what is your approach to ensuring seamless teamwork across disciplines?
For years, our designers, technologists, writers, and product managers have collaborated closely. We believe that this cross-pollination of ideas and disciplines enables us to create products with both strategic depth and speed. A true digital product is constantly evolving and requires multiple rounds of feedback and iteration. Our coders have a deep understanding of user experience (UX) and can challenge or refine it. Meanwhile, our designers are not limited by technological constraints; they know how to use technology wisely.
Today, having a cross-disciplinary setup under one roof is crucial for moving quickly and effectively. This multidisciplinary approach is the foundation of our success.
Bombay DC work often emphasises simplicity and effectiveness. Can you share your process for stripping away complexity while still delivering impactful designs?
Yes, you read that right; we focus on simplicity and effectiveness. Our goal is to create useful and beautiful digital experiences. We begin by considering the people who will use our product and interact with these experiences. We explore everything our users will encounter, their thoughts, mindsets, and the contexts in which they will use our product. This approach allows us to cut through the noise and focus on what truly matters by eliminating the unnecessary.
Additionally, our behaviour design team applies behavioural diagnosis and psychological principles to refine the user journey, ensuring that every touchpoint is as effective as possible.
