Client: Bon-fiction
Category: Bean-to-bar, artisanal chocolate
Requirement: Brand Strategy, Name, Identity and Packaging Design
Bon-fiction was founded by Akhil and Prathina Grandhi. Their cacao beans come from their own (and neighbouring) farms, grown sustainably around the river Godavari.
India’s chocolate bar industry is growing rapidly, driven by rising disposable incomes, evolving consumer preferences, and a shift towards premium and artisanal offerings. While mass-market brands like Cadbury and Nestlé dominate, there’s a surge in homegrown craft chocolatiers focusing on bean-to-bar, sustainable sourcing, and unique flavours.
To create a chocolate brand that stands out in a market dominated by mass players, balancing premium quality, unique flavours, and compelling storytelling to capture evolving consumer tastes.
The design had to:
Break away from mass-market familiarity.
Balance rootedness with modern eclecticism.
Translate each flavour into a story worth reading (and tasting).
The creative approach was to treat Bon-fiction as both a chocolate brand and a literary experience.
Logo & Typography: A custom-lettered typemark anchors the brand. Its handcrafted quality mirrors the precision and artistry of chocolate-making. Paired with beautiful, carefully chosen typefaces, the identity feels both contemporary and timeless.
Packaging System: Each variant takes on the guise of a book title. Flavour names are treated like chapter headings, weaving in literary references while hinting at key ingredients. This instantly sets the tone: every bar isn’t just a treat, it’s a story.
Illustration & Layout: Simple, uncluttered layouts are brought alive with custom illustrations. The balance of whimsy and tradition keeps the design inviting yet sophisticated—comfortable in the chocolate aisle, but never generic.
