Bringing Uncensored to the Table: Fashion for free minds

DW and Marco Scaiano have collaborated to bring the potent notion of Freedom of Speech to the frontline through the confluence of Journalism and Fashion.

2022 could not have ended on a better note than this.

As Schiaparelli once said, “In difficult times, Fashion is always outrageous.”, the world of fashion is finally looking towards the horizon of a change that has been the calling of an era for so long. Replace the term “outrageous” with “uncensored” and you have got yourselves the Uncensored Collection.

The Groundwork

We have information flowing constantly at a faster pace than ever before. With the heavy consumption of information and restless finger-tapping behind the blue screen, cyber policing and security come into play at a powerful level. But, along with internet saviours, we also witness redirection and control of information distributed among common people.

Under the disguise of intellectual deconstructions or critique, the information framework is being interfered with by various organisations. Countries across the world are reviewing and censoring the information being digested by their people.

This shows the darker side of an era which has persistently seen campaigns, activism, and movements for the empowerment of Freedom of Speech time and time, again.

Any deliberate effort to restrict the reality of the world we live in is a game too risky to play, especially when the contender is journalism.

So to preserve the right to expression, Deutsche Welle, the German Broadcaster, has initiated a global campaign along with Berlin-based fashion designer, Marco Scaiano to spread awareness of the censorship in the Journalism industry and find ways to circumvent it.

The Collection - Threading Technology

The devil's in the details, right?

And, the embroidered details of the Uncensored Collection are a pinnacle of our generation which could make even Miranda Priestly turn her head.

Since its foundation in 1953, DW (Deutsche Welle) has strived to fight the censorship vigilante and devise solutions to overcome the act of redaction within journalists' space.

Hailing with the quote, Made for Minds, DW has elevated its armour to support Journalists by curating a fashion collection with Scaiano that, unapologetically, labels itself as Fashion for Free Minds.

Like the classic fashion veterans would say, Fashion is a statement, the garments from the Uncensored Collection have the same motif through their fabrics, but with a better concept. Wearing this collection would bring you a creative layer of technology merged with fashion.

These outfits, designed by Marco Scaiano, have special instructions hidden on the sewn labels which allows the users to access tools to circumvent censorship and gain unbiased information through independent media anywhere in the world.

This is How We Do It

Sounds trippy?

A peculiar reason why the Uncensored Collection is a breakthrough is that it bridges the gap between the holy trinity of generations: Boomers, Millennials and Generation Z by introducing simplified instructions which can evaluate your contribution to this empowering campaign.

Putting It On The Table

Don't let the white, black, and neutrals with minimalist illustrations fool you away from the phenomenal stance that Uncensored Collection has bestowed upon the present world that is suffering from political diversions and violence against the right to express yourself.

This isn't the first act of circumventing censorship that DW has taken. In the context of recent scenarios in China and Iran, DW's Psiphon, a circumvention system, has been helping users to access unfiltered and unbiased information. Psiphon has been used by DW for a decade and it functions on multiple proxy servers to ensure data security, effectively.

Another exciting factor is that the sales collection from Uncensored Collection will be proceeded to Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an American non-profit organisation working for the rights of Journalists and Freedom of the Press. Talk about knowing what they are doing!

Ralph Lauren's "I don't design clothes. I design dreams." is reflective of what Guido Baumhauer, Managing Director of Distribution, Marketing and Technology accountable for Deutsche Welle's global marketing said about this collection, "Freedom is stitched into everything we do."

They did design the dream!
