The mural at Starbucks Colaba wasn’t just about creating something beautiful—it was about creating something meaningful. Nestled inside Dhanraj Mahal, a landmark Art Deco building and former residence of the Dhanrajgir royal family, the space carries historical significance. Rohan Dahotre, tasked with illustrating the mural, took cues from this architectural heritage.
“Starbucks had a clear vision—they wanted the mural to resonate with the local flavour of Colaba,” Rohan shares. One key element they specifically requested? The Gateway of India. Just around the corner from the store, this iconic structure finds a subtle but unmistakable presence in the mural, adding a layer of connection for both tourists and locals.
Inspired by Dhanraj Mahal’s unique 1930s architecture—characterised by streamlined forms, symmetry, and bold decorative motifs—Rohan carried the Art Deco aesthetic into the mural. The goal was to make the mural feel like a natural extension of the building, not just a visual insert. Through the use of geometric symmetry, curved lines, and stylised forms, the mural mirrors the elegance and timelessness of its surroundings.
